Trees are alive!! And like us have vessels. Where we have blood, trees have sap circulating through its vessels which nourishes its cells so it can produce leaves, branches and wood. With early spring a time when the sap is gurgling its way up the tree this week our mystery box contained some stethoscopes for the children to use.
I offered up challenges for the children to discover what sounds they could hear with a stethoscope pressed agaist a tree.
The children tried out different tree species or different thicknesses. The children honed their listening skills as they told me the noises they could such as creaking as the trees moved and the heartbeat like bubbles rather than a boom boom the sap moved up the tree. Even the dead wood on the floor had their own sounds.
Trees are alive like us said one child. Yes they certainly are!!
